Ban Polystyrene and Single-use Plastic in CT!

Support the passage of HB6229

Update 3/17/25

The chapter has submitted written testimony in support of HB6229 and will be speaking in support of the bill at a coming hearing.

Background

Our Surfrider Foundation Connecticut Chapter is supporting the passage of HB6229, an act to reduce the production of single-use plastics and polystyrene waste in the state.

HB6229 represents a critical opportunity to address these challenges and protect the long-term vitality of Connecticut's beaches and waterways.

This legislation supports key measures that would have a significant positive impact on the health of our ecosystems by:

1. Banning the sale, purchase, and use of any materials made of polystyrene, including food ware, beverage products and packaging products

2. Banning the sale, purchase, and use of any single-use plastic cutlery, straws, stirrers, and other food-ware accessories

Polystyrene and single-use plastic food-ware pose many dangers to our coastlines and the communities around them, as they:

  1. Do not biodegrade and break down in our lifetimes
  2. Are made from non-renewable fossil fuels and synthetic chemicals that may leach out over time
  3. Do not get recycled
  4. End up in our oceans, harming marine life and impacting human health.

HB6229 is a crucial piece of legislation that will not only protect our coastal resources but also help foster a more sustainable and resilient future for our state.
