After well over a year of working with all the Downbeach towns on single-use bag reduction, Longport has just passed the first in the state legislation on single use bags. There was some drama though, with Retailers Association of NJ send a letter to the Mayor and Council claiming that the town did not have to power to place a fee on bags, and they even called it a tax.
Of course it is not a tax and the Mayor and Commissioners stood their ground and passed this historic legislation. Everyone who spoke on the ordinance spoke in favor of it and the Mayor singled out owners of a local restaurant for praise.
